Rolesville Middle School RamsHello, RMS Families,

I recently had the pleasure of again chaperoning the FCCLA state leadership conference in Greensboro. The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization is one of the clubs we have at RMS for students.

This year at the conference, we had eight students competing in events including social advocacy, entrepreneurship, life event planning, illustrated talk and focus on children. These students worked for weeks on their presentations with the help of their advisor and Family and Consumer Science teacher, Chasity Johnson. We earned four bronze medals and one silver medal. The students could also attend leadership workshops.

I must admit it was a great experience seeing the students compete and also stepping up to leadership roles. Three of our students who competed are sixth-graders! We hope that this experience exposes them to opportunities they can have not only within the FCCLA club but with becoming leaders within the school and their community. After all, that’s part of our mission at RMS “to prepare students to be self-reliant, community-minded and globally engaged citizens.”

In case you haven’t heard: RMS has a new blog! It’s called Ramblings on Rams (http://blogs.wcpss.net/ramblingsonrams/). Our new blog is another great way for parents to keep up with the happenings at RMS. Each week, a different staff member will share information on a variety of topics. Some of those include academics, testing and AIG information. But we’ll also use the blog to share nuggets of information that will help you and your student navigate middle school. For instance, we’ll discuss the parents’ and students’ roles in middle school, homework skills and who can provide additional support within the building. As we go into our fifth year as a school, we want to make sure we have a variety of communication tools so that our parents, students and community partners stay in the loop.

Speaking of staying in the loop: End of Grade tests are fast approaching, and we NEED your help. Please consider being a proctor. We will have a SignUpGenius invitation coming out very soon for volunteering. Here are the dates for your calendar: Track 1 on May 20, 23, 24 and 25, and Track 2, 3, and 4 on June 17, 20, 21 and 22.

Now for a matter of business: If you have a parent portal account, you can now check to see if the contact information on file is correct. If there are any changes to your phone number or email address, please contact the school so that we can update that information.

Finally, if there are any groups out there who would like to help the school complete some projects we have in mind, please let us know.
