Happy New Year, RMS Families!
Second semester is a busy time of the year as we not only will finish out the school year but will spend a lot of time preparing students for transitioning to the next grade level.
I’d like to take some time to talk to all of our eighth-grade parents regarding high school registration. Please mark your calendars for our High School on the Horizon program on January 26 at 6:30 p.m. This program will help you understand the high school graduation requirements and how you will be able to assist your child in the high school registration process.
Please also make sure you are checking Blackboard and the counselors’ Weebly (www.rmsschoolcounselors.weebly.com) for updates. On these sites, the counselors will post registration timelines, high school course information and dates for high school open houses. It is important that you also attend the high school open house events. High school staff will give you information about specific courses offered and help prepare you and your student for the ninth-grade transition. So be sure to check the website weekly for these updates.
As part of the high school transition, counselors have already started having conversations with students about graduation requirements and making the connection between high school and college and how that relates to careers and real world responsibilities. We provide a lesson where we assign students a career and the students have to calculate their yearly and monthly salaries. We calculate taxes and then have the students pay bills. This lesson is an eye-opener for most students. I must say … some of them are planning to stay with their parents a little bit longer.
There will also be lots of information for our rising sixth-grade parents and our current students moving to the next grade levels. Please stay tuned as I’ll share information in the column about our internal registration process for electives.
And a reminder: This is a good time of the year to check in with your child’s teachers and discuss strategies on having a strong second semester. If you need additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor to help guide you through the process.
Let’s make it a RAMTASTIC semester!!!!
